The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne
The mysterious island by Jules Verne I just finished reading "The mysterious island" by Jules Verne a few days ago, so I decided to share it with the world. At least a small description of it anyway. More like a spoiler. The start of the story The action takes place during the American Civil War. Our main characters are blocked in a southern town that is under siege by General Grant's troops. They decide to escape using a hot air balloon that the southerns planned to use to inform General Lee of the siege. While they make their escape, they are cough by a powerful storm, a hurricane and are carried away by the strong wind.A few days later they crash on a deserted island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean with no food, equipment or any means to get in contact with civilization. Their adventures begin After they are all reunited they start off to explore the island. It's a volcanic island with a very rich and fertile soil, with vast forests and highly populated by animals. They secure a temporary home for themselves and begin to develop the land to provide them with everything they need. In time they manage to domesticate several animals as livestock, they create a furnace to burn pottery and another one for metal work, they plant all sorts of cultures. They begin to believe they will never lack anything on this island and if they were to leave someday, they will eventually come back. They even build a small boat and start exploring the waters around their small island. At the first trip they took in their boat, they found a bottle with a message that said there was in a man in the same situation as them, stranded on an island not far from them. So they used the boat and traveled to that island and saved the man, which they brought back with them. They latter find out his sad story, what he did, how he was abandoned on the island and how he was promised that someday someone will come to take him home. This way a chance of salvation appears in their eyes. Over the course of their stay there, they run into several strange occurrences. It was like each time that they were in trouble, some unseen force would come to their help. For example, one of them, the youngest, caught a very dangerous fever and they lacked the medicine to treat it. The day everyone expected the boy to die, they found a box with the required medicine on a table next to his bed. Another time, when pirates were ready to open fire upon their hideout, some mysterious explosion took place and sank the pirates ship. And many such events, thus the title of the book. Closing Although I wanted to tell everyone what the strange force that helped our heroes was, I decided it's better to find out for yourselves. It will be worth reading the book, believe me. Jules Verne has his special way of writing and many agree that the books he wrote had a great impact on the way human society has evolved. Things that were considered fiction in Verne's novels, have now become fact. Who knows, many those books sparked the imagination of the inventors. |
