Romanian Language - Past and Present

By Stelian Adumitroaei

Romania as a country

The origins of the Romanian people are well known among the people of the current Romania. The territories the Romanians occupy today are the former territories of the Dacians, the ancient Dacia kingdom. Under the rule of Decebalus (or Decebal in Romanian) the kingdom was conquered by the Roman Empire, at that time under the rule of Emperor Trajan. The Roman colonization began immediatly after that and shaped the brute form of the Romanian people. After the Roman retreat there were several wars for independence and protection of the original border. The country was separated and fought individually against the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Polish Empire but mostly against the Ottoman Empire. After many battles and wars Romania was finally recognized as an "independent state" in 1878, through the Treaty of Berlin.

Romanian language

The Romanian language is mainly a mix of several languages, but its main roots are constituted from the ancient Dacian language and the Latin language spoken by the Roman occupants. After the occupation by the Roman Empire, there was a strong romanisation process that led to the creation of proto-Romanian. This relation to the Latin language is kept until present day, which makes it easy for Romanians to understand other Latin languages like Italian, Spanish and Portuguese.

After the Roman retreat until the Middle Dark Ages, several nomadic people and empires invaded Romanian territories and some have settled and mixed with the locals. This has brought a lot of influences to the still undefined language. Among these there were the Slavs, the Goths and the Huns. All these influences created most of the modern day Romanian language.

Romanian language refinement

Between the 17'th and 19'th century, Romania also took a lot of influences from the East European countries, like France, Germany and England, because of their advanced cultural and technological status. These also led to the creation of a specific accent and the refining of the Romanian language, both written and spoken.

These days Romanian is recognized as one of the six most important Romance languages, alongside French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and Catalan.

I always preferred the spelling 'Roumanian' as it sounds more roumantic.

CONTRIBUTOR'S REPLY

It may be so, but the correct form is Romanian (Română), as in Romania (România)
