Grepolis - the new online game from InnoGames
By Stelian Adumitroaei
First of all, I would like to make clear to everyone the fact that this intel does not contain any affiliate or referral links within. It's just here because I felt like writing and I believe, or at least want to believe, that by sharing we will move forward. With that being said, let's get started. Grepolis, is the new game published by Innogames (www.innogames.de), one of the top contenders on the online browser games market. InnoGames is also known for two other great titles in the field: The West and probably one of the most known ones, Tribal Wars. The company started around 2003 as a hobby, the way all great things come to be. Later on, thanks to it's great success part of the company has been "purchased" (I'm not sure that is the right term to use) by Gameforge AG. But that's all business talk and many don't even want to hear about it. We have a lot on our head already. Back to the subject at hand, Grepolis. I've been an avid player of the previous games InnoGames have release. I have played Tribal Wars until I became hooked and backed away from it. At the moment I'm still playing The West and I love it. I have played many worlds on various international servers and I enjoyed the company of many others that shared my passions. After all, that's one of the purposes of online games: bringing people together and building a community. Grepolis is the same. Granted there are other online games out there that have the same idea as their basis. Tribal Wars is very similar. Ikarian is a lot more eye-candy. Travian is a classic by now. But Grepolis just seems to be something else. Even if just in development at this moment (February 19th 2010). Like any other browser based game that has the development of a town at it's core, you need to build various buildings, level up and conquer your enemies and/or neighbors to be the top gun in the game. All based in ancient Greece. Some might say that it's a copy of other already successful games (I already mentioned Ikariam, Travian and Tribal Wars) but I feel it's something more. It's like a mix between all these and something extra. For example: I'm not sure if Ikariam (also with a Greek theme) gave you the possibility to select from a range of gods to worship, each with different powers and units. Tribal Wars certainly doesn't allow naval attacks and Travian ... don't get me started on that one. Without a Premium account the first more powerful attack will make you so vulnerable to farming you wouldn't believe it. After writing these things, I realize that there aren't many thing that would convince people to play this game. But there are. One of them is the experience of the team of developers behind it. The other main reason would be the fact that it has taken a lot of the positive things from already existing games and they have incorporated them in Grepolis. If you top that with the fact that you can be a part of a very active community and you can make a lot of new friends, I would say that it's a great way to spend your time. Just don't get too into it. After all: it's just a game, the real life is out there. I might not have said a lot of things about Grepolis, about the type of units and buildings that you can build, the battle or economical system behind it. I don't have to. All these things can be found in the official wiki. My main point remain: another great multiplayer online game from InnoGames. It's worth giving it a try. |
